The Director of the Faculty of Academic Affairs & Research at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) has described the chaotic scene in Parliament on Thursday as a sad day for the country’s democracy.
In the wee hours of the inauguration of Members of Parliament, a scuffle erupted in the House in the process of electing the Speaker of Parliament.
According to Prof Kwesi Aning, the behaviour of the MPs was distasteful, uncalled for and raises a very fundamental question about the ethics and morality that drives the country's politics.
Speaking on the AM Show on Friday, he hinted that the act of vigilantism in the country is funded and supported by some members of the Legislature.
“It is a sad day for Ghana’s democracy and potentially a dangerous one too. It was a day of disgrace for our politics. The day that showed that the gangsterism that we’ve characterized as vigilantism is actually perpetrated, supported and funded by some of these people who sit in that House,” he said.
He further opined that the behaviour of some of the parliamentarians was a raw demonstration of their disrespect towards the people of Ghana.
Nevertheless, Prof Kwesi Aning suggested that the legislators must be made to apologise to the people of Ghana.
“There is no way to describe this, it was an act of disgrace, it was a dishonourable performance, and they owe us, the ordinary people of Ghana an apology,” he emphasized.
