Churches have been urged to comply with government restrictions to prevent the possible spread of the Coronavirus Disease (Covid-19) in the Easter festivities.

The Bono Regional Minister, Madam Justina Owusu-Banahene made the call in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani on Thursday.

She noted that although some Ghanaians had been vaccinated against the virus, it was however imperative for churches and religious bodies to adhere strictly to health safety protocols, as worshippers gather in their numbers to commemorate the death of Jesus Christ.

"Though some people have taken the vaccine, this does not guarantee total safety and everybody must endeavour to observe the Covid-19 health protocols either you have been vaccinated or yet to be vaccinated", she said.

Madam Owusu-Banahene warned churches and congregations that the failure of its members to comply with the government's mandatory two-hour worship restriction would not go unpunished, adding that churches should ensure worshippers wear face masks or face shields.

She said the Covid-19 task force would patrol churches and Easter Retreat and Convention grounds to ensure worshippers complied with all safety measures to prevent the spread of the viral disease.

Madam Owusu-Banahene advised the populace to celebrate Easter in moderation and use the festivities to show love and compassion, by supporting the needy and vulnerable in society.

"The celebration of the death of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ must put us together as one people. We must try and put smiles on the face of the needy in society and I believe that would enable them to recognise and appreciate the love of Christ. This is what Easter is meant to be," the Regional Minister stated.

Madam Owusu-Banahene admonished the youth against alcoholism and promiscuity, saying such unhealthy practices were unworthy to be associated with the celebration of the death of our Jesus Christ".

She advised drivers and all road users to observe road safety regulations and avoid over-speeding to prevent unacceptable road crashes and avoidable fatalities on the highway.
