Executive Director and founder of Toptech Transport & Logistics has called on the Minister for Roads and Highway, Kwasi Amoako-Atta to re-evaluate the mandatory towing levy.
Cecil Garbrah said owners of brand new vehicles should not be allowed to pay the mandatory towing levy.
"I understand that in every country, road safety can make the country rich. But as for this one alone, they should sit down and look at it. Who is going to pay?
According to him, brand new vehicles are strong enough, unlike home-used vehicles that have to be towed off the roads every now and then.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show Friday, Mr Garbrah said that it is easier to park and move faulty cars off the roads than big trucks and that citizens who own cars do not need to pay the mandatory towing levy.
"If it’s for the big truck alone, fine? It shouldn’t be across board for every vehicle to pay this amount. I don’t think it is fair. I’m sure that is why Ghanaians were very angry and went against it."
Justifying why brand new vehicles should be excluded from paying the towing levy, he said, "If big trucks are going to pay this levy, I would agree that fine, when they are going to renew the roadworthy certificate, they must pay and not to cut across to all of us."
This comes after the Director of Planning and Programs at the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), David Adonteng in an interview with JoyNews said plans are underway to bring back the Mandatory Tow Levy.
According to the Authority, the re-introduction of the road tow levy is part of measures to improve safety on the country’s roads.
The mandatory levy will be imposed on all owners and persons in charge of motor vehicles, for the purpose of towing broken down or disabled vehicles on the roads.
