The Tamale North MP Alhassan Suhuyini has disclosed the reason why he raised objection over the approval of the Deputy Minister nominee for Education, Gifty Twum Ampofo.
The member of Parliament’s Appointment Committee explained that it was because her conscience wasn’t aligned with the threats of corruption.
The former broadcaster said Parliament’s decision to block the approval of the nominee gave him inspiration.
“I thank the Caucus in general for the solidarity. It gives me inspiration. Indeed, when it comes to doing what is right, our side will always rise to the occasion,” he added.
He noted that upon further consultation with leadership it was decided that her approval will be delayed.
Asked whether his decision to fight against her approval was because she accosted him after the vetting, Mr Suhuyini said he didn’t have anything personal with the nominee.
However, he indicated that after interaction with her after the vetting, he sensed her conscience wasn’t aligned to corruption threats.
“It shouldn’t be just how I felt after she accosted me, it’s about the motivation to ensure that at all times people are alive to the threat of corruption,” he stressed.
He made this known after Parliament withheld the approval of three deputy minister nominees following concerns by the Minority.
Amidu Issahaku Chinnia, who has been appointed as Deputy Minister to the Sanitation Ministry and Diana Asonaba Dapaah who is Deputy Attorney General designate were part of a list of 15 nominees the House considered on Friday.
But, the report of the Appointment Committee recommending approval was amended to exclude the three following objections by the Minority.
The Tamale North MP said he was excited about the support he is getting from his colleagues to kick against the Deputy Education Minister's nomination.
But, Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo Markins, said the issues will be resolved next week.
“Obviously, the posture of this Parliament is to build consensus and I’m proud to say that the first batch of nominees have been passed,” he observed.
The Effutu MP said the three nominees' approval was not put on hold because of someone’s problem with another.
“I have indicated that there are outstanding reports. Let’s wait on Tuesday and deal with the outstanding issues. Let us not preempt someone was not approved because it was because there was no consensus,” he added.
