Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has urged Parliament not to hesitate to take drastic action if it is dissatisfied with the outcome of the government’s investigation into the reported refusal of emergency care to a hit-and-run victim.
Speaking on the floor of the House on Tuesday, February 24, Mr Ayariga said that although the government has announced the formation of a committee to probe the incident, Parliament must independently satisfy itself that justice is done.
He insisted that the Health Committee of Parliament should closely follow the investigation and present its own assessment to the House.
“And if we are not satisfied with the outcome and the conclusions of government, that this Parliament takes very drastic action,” he declared.
The Majority Leader stressed that cases involving alleged denial of emergency treatment must not end with statements and committee reports that gather dust.
He said Parliament has a constitutional duty to ensure that public institutions, particularly health facilities, uphold their responsibility to protect lives.
“It is only then that citizens will know that when we converge here, we converge here for their very existence. We are here to defend their lives, to defend their rights, and to defend their interests,” he said.
His comments come amid renewed public concern over emergency response failures within parts of the health system, following reports that an accident victim was allegedly turned away by three hospitals due to lack of bed space.
