The Northern Region has recorded 11 new active cases of Covid-19. Two of the victims are said to be in critical condition.
This was confirmed by the Northern Regional Health Director, Dr. John Benson Eleeza.
Dr. Eleeza disclosed this at the 2021 International Day of Nurses and Midwives celebration dubbed “Nurses and Midwives, a voice to lead in a vision for transformed health in the post-Covid-19 world " in Tamale on Thursday.
The patients are currently receiving treatment at the Tamale Teaching Hospital treatment center.
As of July 25, the Ghana Health Service on its website recorded 4,983 active cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 103,019.
Dr. Eleeza further appealed to the health workers in the region to continue to observe the necessary protocols to protect themselves and their families.
”It is we the health workers who go to radio stations telling others to comply with the protocol and at times when I meet some of you in town you either don’t have any face mask on at all or it's under your chin,” he said.
Dr Eleeza added that “Some of you when you are in the workplace, you are in the face mask till you close, but immediately you close, it's like you have left the Covid zone, Meanwhile, Covid is in the community, so you see, the facemask quickly goes into your pockets, the facemask is not for the pocket."
He also urged them to exhibit professionalism in their line of duty as the core mandate of nurses and midwives.
Dr. John Eleeza added that the challenges of Covid -19 have offered health workers a great insight into their weaknesses as well as offered them the opportunity to learn a great lesson.
He commended the newly voted-in Executives of the Nurses and Midwives Association to use their voice for strong advocacy which has the potential of attracting the needed response in certain key issues that affects them.
A lecturer at the School of Public Health at the University for Development Studies Dr. Yaa Nyarko Agyemang said 2020 marked the year, in which the world over, appreciated the work of nurses that t even places where doctors and other health professionals could not go, nurses risked their lives saving others. “We had nurses who died as a result of this fight” she added.
She said even though nurses were applauded for their immense support during and post Covid-19 period, much is needed to be done to better protect front liners in future events.
