In a bid to strengthen irrigation farming and improve agricultural productivity, the Northern Regional Minister, Ali Adolf John, on behalf of the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, handed over 100 water pump machines to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) across the Northern Region.
The ceremony took place at the forecourt of the Department of Agriculture in Tamale.
The event was attended by the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Kumbungu, Imoro Yakubu Kakpagu; the Northern Regional Director of Agriculture, Hajia Hawa Musah; and representatives from various MMDAs across the region.

The water pumps, originally seized from illegal mining (galamsey) operations, are being repurposed to support irrigation farming during the dry season.
Ali Adolf John emphasised that the machines should be used strictly for agricultural purposes to maximise their impact on food production and livelihoods.

He cautioned against any misuse, particularly for illegal mining, and highlighted the importance of proper handling and regular maintenance to ensure the longevity of the equipment.
The Regional Minister also called on the Northern Regional Directorate of Agriculture to supervise the allocation and utilisation of the pumps, ensuring accountability and efficiency in their deployment.
“This intervention is expected to enhance food production and improve livelihoods across the region,” he stated.

In response, the DCE for Kumbungu, Imoro Yakubu Kakpagu, expressed gratitude to the Minister for Food and Agriculture, the Northern Regional Minister, and the government for the timely support.
He assured that the water pumps would be used solely for their intended purpose, reinforcing the assemblies’ commitment to sustainable agricultural development in the Northern Region.
