A human trafficking and organised cybercrime syndicate has been busted by the police, following a targeted intelligence-led operation at Pokuase in the Greater Accra Region.
The Special Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team, supported by Combat Teams and the Surveillance Unit from the Ghana Police Service, carried out the operation on Thursday.
A total of 22 suspects were picked from the primary location at Pokuase-Afiaman, where the police uncovered a large-scale cyber fraud hub commonly referred to as the “Yahoo Boys” base.
According to the police, the suspects were found actively behind computer systems facilitating international internet fraud activities when the police swooped in on them.
"Preliminary investigations further revealed a structured hierarchy within the syndicate, including individuals responsible for enforcing control and discipline over trafficked," a police situational report (SITREP) seen by Graphic Online said.
The Police believe the syndicate forms part of a sophisticated trans-national criminal network involved in human trafficking and cyber fraud, with indications that some of the younger suspects may themselves be victims of coercion and forced labour.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has reiterated its firm commitment to combating organised crime, protecting vulnerable persons, and ensuring that all individuals involved in human trafficking and cyber-related offences are brought to justice.
