A Labour Expert, Austin Gamey, has called for a national development plan to facilitate efforts towards the reduction of unemployment in the country.
According to him, the government should effectively engage the services of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) to deal with the situation.
"Job creation is a function of the economy, and for a very long time, after Kwame Nkrumah’s seven-year development plan, we don’t have a national development plan."
In an interview on Prime Morning on Wednesday, he bemoaned the seeming politicisation of the current unemployment menace.
"The function of the economy dictates what the employment conditions of the nation should be for both the state and especially the private sector people. This business of relying on entrepreneurship is good but is based on what?"
He added: "What we need is something that can be meaningful and held by the people. Already, we, as Ghanaians, are resilient when it comes to wanting to venture into something ourselves, and that’s why we are predominantly an informal sector."
Currently, unemployment among Ghanaian youth is high.
The government has already given the strongest indication that it is not well-placed to employ more people in the public sector.
The Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, speaking at a Springboard-Ghana Cares Youth Dialogue earlier this month, urged young people to venture into entrepreneurship instead of looking up to the government for jobs in the public sector.
“We have gone through a period where most people look for jobs with the government. That payroll is full because we are spending some 60% of revenue on the remuneration of some 650,000 people, and that is not sustainable,” he disclosed.
Many security experts have warned that the country is sitting on a time bomb if drastic measures are not taken to solve the challenge.
Earlier this week, thousands of youth gathered at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra, and the Babayara Sports Stadium in Kumasi to undergo selection processes in a bid to get recruited into the Ghana Immigration Service.
A similar situation occurred at Wa when dozens of job seekers stormed the recruitment centre on Tuesday night ahead of the exercise which took place on Wednesday.
For experts, the unemployment situation threatens the security of the nation and should be looked at.
