Members of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) have called off their strike action.
The industrial action, which started this morning was to protest what they termed, "poor conditions of service."
In a press release dated January 20, CLOGSAG announced that government has reviewed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to meet their demand for better conditions of service.
“The National Executive Council (NEC) of CLOGSAG has, therefore, decided to call off the Strike. All members should organize themselves and resume work on Monday 24th January, 2022,” part of the statement signed by Executive Secretary Isaac Bampoe Addo indicated.
“We are grateful to all our members for their support and the print and electronic media for the coverage of our activities,” they added.
The leadership of CLOGSAG earlier contended that a year after their proposed salary structure was sent to the Finance Ministry to address their concerns, the Ministry is yet to communicate anything to them despite persistent reminders.
The Association said its members felt sidelined, which left them with no option but to declare an industrial action.
He said CLOGSAG realised that all other Services had an enhanced salary structure apart from the Civil Service.
The impact of the industrial action embarked on by CLOGSAG on Thursday morning hit clients hard across the country.
The strike gained ground as staff of various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), as well as other government agencies, laid down their tools in solidarity.
In Kumasi, there was no much activity at most government agencies and workers were few.
The news team visited some institutions in Accra, including the Registrar-General’s Department, to assess the situation. The facility was closed for business. Clients who had appointments at the agency were turned away in disappointment.
“I came here to verify a marriage certificate, and I was told that they are on strike. I was surprised because I didn’t know anything about it,” a disappointed client told Ernest Manu of JoyNews.
The situation was no different at the Railways Development, Finance, Works and Housing, Sanitation and Water Resources Ministries, among others.
On the eve of the strike, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) stated that the government had granted some aspects of the demands of CLOGSAG while others are being worked on.
“In that same MOU, CLOGSAG, on the basis of the agreement committed to calling off the nationwide strike with immediate effect. We wish to thank the leadership of CLOGSAG for their cooperation in this matter,” the FWSC stated.
