A philanthropist in collaboration with Federation of Muslim Women Association in Ghana (FOMWAG) distributed hundred of menstrual cups to young girls in the Eastern and Ashanti regions.
According to Queen Aminata, the sanitary material can be reused for a period of 10 years.
She expressed the need for young girls to stay in school despite their menstruation period.
Madam Aminata said the immediate target is to reach 40 per cent of young girls across the country.
"Well! we are just starting, so I'm projecting that we are going to be able to get this to at least 40% of girls in the country. From start off, that's our goal and we will grow from there. But we just introduced the menstrual cap right now, so it will be a slow process but we will get there."
To be able to reach a majority of girls, she urged government and other abled organisations to lend a helping hand.
FOMWAG believes the initiative is one of the most compelling ways to deal with menstrual problems among girls.
The Federation noted that the use of menstrual cups is more convenient, affordable, and tidy for young girls in school.
The Secretary of the Association, Hajia Fridaus Ishaq Abdul Mumin, further explained that when the menstrual cup is well washed with hot water and kept clean, it could be reused for about 10 years.
According to her, the cup is biodegradable and not harmful to humans or the environment.
A beneficiary, Alhassan Salamatu, a student of Islamic Senior High School expressed gratitude to Madam Aminata and FOMWAG for their support towards the growth of female education. She believes many girls will not be financially burdened during their menstruation period.
