Three hundred and eighty-one persons have benefited from the cash-for-work initiative with local infrastructural developments implemented by SOS-GrEEn under UNCDF to address unemployment in the Ashanti and Western regions.
This was revealed by the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) during a stakeholder consultative meeting with implementing partners.
It was organized together with some MMDAs in the Ashanti and Western regions sought to implement and intensify advocacies for climate change adaptation.
The UNDCF's Local Climate Adaptive Living (LoCAL) facility, is designed to help governments channel global climate adaptation financing to the local level and improve the resilience of local assemblies and communities.
Technical Specialist, UNCDF Ghana, Angela Yayra Kwashie explains the key objectives for the year, 2022.
"The MMDA's were able to let us know the plans they have for 2022 implementation. Each MMDA's presented what has been done in the implementation year and we critique they are investment that they have selected.
We will work with them to ensure that the intervention that has been selected will yield to climate change adaptation and are yielding resilience at the local level," she said.
She also revealed, “this is a performance grant system and at the end of the cycle we access the MMDA's with some indicators. And this will attract the amount of funding we will give them to improve their performance".
GrEEn uses the UNCDF- Local Climate Adaptive Living facility (LoCAL) and its internationally recognized tools to channel climate finance to local government levels.
The initiative is implemented in 6 districts in the Ashanti region and 4 districts Western region.
LoCAL has further highlighted and bridged climate resilience with socioeconomic developmental needs at the local level.
The initiative has established targets in terms of local job creation, particularly in the green economy.
In 2021, 381 persons benefited from the cash for work initiative with local infrastructural developments implemented by SOS-GrEEn under UNCDF.
"Through GrEEn we were able to train most of the youth, most of them were able to save and they're now entrepreneurs. GrEEn really came as a saviour to my district, because crossing the river was a problem in the community.
"Farmers are now able to transport their foodstuff after a bridge was constructed," Site Engineer at Offinso North District, Maxwell Ampim Bortsie said.
