The Deputy Roads and Highways Minister, Stephen Jalulah, has revealed that the tolling scheme on the Accra-Tema motorway will vary depending on what side of the road one would be using.
It will be recalled that the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, announced that road tolls would be returning to Ghana’s roads once again, except that they will only be applied on roads that are built using a Public-Private Partnership (PPP).
The Accra-Tema motorway being the first of such roads will be tolled after completion to pay off investors.
Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express, Stephen Jalulah noted that whiles the motorway generally will be tolled, the cost of tolling will vary depending on the lane one is using.
He said, “These are early days yet, what I know is that the design is going to be such that two lanes on either side of the road will be express roads and it will be concrete as well. Then there will be additional three lanes on either side, and that will be slip roads and access roads.
“My understanding is that the tolling is going to vary. If you’re using the express way, you may pay a little higher than when you are using the side road.”
He further noted that even as the government hurries to complete the Accra-Tema motorway, it is also earnestly working on the Accra-Tema beach road to serve as an alternate route.
He revealed that the beach road upon completion will not be tolled.
“And also beyond that I think that we all know the layout of Accra, and as we speak now, the government is busily developing the coastal road, the beach road, from the Independence square towards Tema and in case that it completes before the motorway, those who may not be able to use the motorway can conveniently use the beach road to access Tema and Accra.
“For now the tolling will be done on the Tema Motorway and as the Minister said, going forward, whatever road the government will do on PPP arrangements will be tolled,” he said.
