Quophi Okyeame, a broadcaster and one-half of the defunct hiplife duo Akyeame, is not enthused about the BBC’s hiplife documentary on hiplife.
The artiste, registering his displeasure about the project, described it as misleading and non-factual.
“I watched this Hiplife documentary on YouTube yesterday which is produced by BBC and now fully understand why HIPLIFE IS DEAD. The 30 minutes plus presentation lacks the facts and is very misleading. Apuuu!!! Wei,” he wrote on Twitter.
The 27-minute documentary published on BBC Africa’s YouTube page chronicles the genesis of the hiplife genre, its evolutions, influences, and impact.
It features the originator of the genre, Reggie Rockstone; music video director, Abraham Ohene Gyan; music producer Panji Anoff, rappers M.anifest, Eno Barony, among others.
‘New school’ musicians like Kuami Eugene and KiDi who are not hiplife musicians also narrate how the genre influenced their craft.
It is not clear what Quophi Okyeame’s reservations are with the documentary but some have suggested it does not capture other key personalities and events that contributed greatly to the genre.
Quophi Okyeame’s music group Akyeame, were among the artistes that produced hiplife songs at the incipient stage of the genre.
They are credited with smash hit songs like ‘Mesan Aba’, ‘Menko Meda’, ‘Asa a Aba So’, among others.
