The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Savida Bonwire Kente, Sarkodie Addo has urged Ghanaians to inculcate the habit of patronising locally made products, particularly Kente.
Kente is largely known to be meant for royals and is sometimes used to decorate caskets as a symbol of paying homage to the dead.
Speaking in an interview on Joy Prime’s morning show on Tuesday, Savida Kente noted that everyone, regardless of their status, is qualified to wear Kente compared to some years ago.
"It is a made in Ghana product, and we encourage everyone to patronise made in Ghana goods. So, Kente is for all of us. Kente is for the living, not the dead. Don’t wait till you die before they decorate your corpse with Kente; wear Kente while you live. It is not only for the royals, as it used to be in the past," he urged.
Despite the fact that all individuals are permitted to wear Kente, there are others that are purposely made for royals.
Known for its significance, the CEO revealed that Kente-weaving is a language that one needs to understand before they can weave.
It is for this reason that his firm plans to initiate a new and unique style of weaving Kente, which he refers to as mathematics in Kente.
He said the mathematical aspect of Kente weaving helps in achieving a perfect end product from the raw materials.
The Kente has two types, namely the modern and ancient, and is made in different categories: the northern and southern Kente.
However, the Volta region’s Kente, according to Mr Addo, is the most complex and costliest of all.
