As part of the celebration of the International Women’s Day, Women in Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Gh (WiSTEMGh) KNUST in collaboration with Mensin Gold Bibiani organised an event for some selected Senior High Schools in the municipality.
Sefwi Bekwai SHS, Queens SHS, Bibiani SHS and STEM SHS Awaso were the beneficiaries of the event.
The event under the theme “inspire inclusion” took place at the Bibiani Senior High School.
“All that we are looking for is to inspire our younger generation. We want our younger daughters and sisters to know it is possible and they can do it. We came with accomplished women who once sat at where they are today and inspire them. We came here to inspire inclusion” said general secretary for WiSTEMGh KNUST, Dr Mercy Badu.
WiSTEM is an initiative of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology with the overall objective to facilitate women's scientific, technological and leadership capabilities; provide a framework for intra and inter-institutional collaboration and promote a science and technology culture in the society.
The General Manager of the Mensin Gold mines, Mr Samuel Kwasi Takyi, encouraged the students to take advantage of opportunities available to them.
“We are deliberately moving towards ensuring that our women participation in management level increases. Our data shows that 12% our 2200 workers being women and it our deliberate effort to move from 12% to 30%.
“So we encourage our future engineers and scientist to take advantage of such opportunity that exist at Mensin Gold to become the engineers we are looking out for,” he said.
Professor Mavis Osei, a member of the WiSTEMGh underscored the importance of empathy in the realisation of female inclusion in Ghana.
“I must say inspiring inclusion is just not about changing norms or policies but changing hearts and minds. It’s about fostering a culture of empathy, understanding and solidarity where we celebrate our similarities, work together and create a future for young girls and aspire without limitation,” she said.
