The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Mahama, has congratulated Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey on her groundbreaking election as Commonwealth Secretary-General.
He described her achievement as a proud moment for Ghana and Africa, highlighting the importance of her new role on the global stage.
Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, was appointed as the Commonwealth Secretary-General during the 27th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM 2024) held in Apia, Samoa, on Friday.
Her selection makes her the first African woman to hold this prestigious office, succeeding Patricia Scotland, Baroness Scotland of the United Kingdom.
Mahama, in a Facebook post, commended Botchwey’s dedication to Ghana’s foreign relations, noting her diplomatic expertise and the contributions she has made over her career.
He expressed confidence that her experience would be invaluable in uniting the Commonwealth’s 56 member states and navigating complex international issues.
He also emphasised the significance of her role in strengthening collaboration across Commonwealth countries and tackling shared challenges.
“Congratulations Shirley Ayorkor Botchway on your election as Secretary-General of the Commonwealth. You will be joining a special group of diplomats to help make the Commonwealth and the world a better place."
“I am particularly excited that, after Patricia Scotland, we have another distinguished female at the head of the Commonwealth.”
