The Eastern Regional Minister nominee, Rita Awatey, has committed to enforcing strict mining regulations to promote sustainable development and protect the region’s natural resources.
Speaking during her vetting on Thursday, January 23, Madam Awatey acknowledged the abundant resources in the Eastern Region, including gold and diamond, as a blessing that must be utilised responsibly.

“Eastern Region, of course, is blessed. We have so many resources, including gold, diamond, and other natural minerals. I believe God has given us such a beautiful place to enjoy, but we must enjoy it with rules,” she stated.

Highlighting the negative impacts of illegal mining, also known as galamsey, she expressed concern over the environmental degradation it has caused, including the destruction of water bodies, farmlands, and the quality of air in the region.
She noted that while mining activities would take place, they would be conducted legally and properly.
She pledged to work closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure the implementation and enforcement of Ghana’s mining regulations.

According to her, prioritising small-scale and legalised mining will not only protect the environment but also contribute to the socio-economic development of the region.
“I believe that if we apply the rules and abide by the regulations in mining, we are going to have a beautiful Eastern Region,” she added.
