Public Interest Advocate, Rodaline Imoru Ayarna, has called on the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi to seek reconciliation with the judge involved in his ongoing contempt of court case.
She pointed out the complexities of prosecuting MPs for contempt, saying, "We can’t continue running around trying to catch somebody that is almost impossible to catch.”
Speaking on Newsfile, Mrs Ayarna also reflected on the challenges the judiciary faced during the previous regime, acknowledging that the judicial system had come under intense scrutiny and criticism.
“I believe that the judiciary went under a lot of bashing in the previous regime for so many negative things,” she noted
Despite these challenges, Mrs Ayarna expressed hope that the judiciary would be given an opportunity to restore its credibility.
“I am hoping and praying that we will give them an opportunity to purge themselves from whatever it was that was being said about them in the previous regime.”
“It is very important that all Ghanaians have faith in the judiciary and believe that they are being nationalistic and not partisan or anything,” she added.
Also, Mrs Ayarna recommended that the MP for Akwatia should seek a way to make amends with the judge, suggesting that reconciliation could be a productive step toward resolving the matter.
“This MP should find a way to pacify the judge if possible,” she advised.
The Akwatia MP was convicted Wednesday, February 19, for presenting himself to be sworn in as an MP despite an injunction prohibiting him.
