Minister of State-Designate for Public Sector Reforms, Lydia Lamisi Akanvariba, has defended her qualifications for the role, insisting that experience alone is not the ultimate determinant of leadership.
Speaking during her vetting on Monday, February 24, the Tempane Memeber of Parliament (MP) responded to comments from private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu, who questioned her suitability for the position.
“If experience was the only measure, then professors should be presidents because they have a lot of experience, and only professors in health should be appointed as Health Ministers,” she said.
“Leadership is about the ability to collaborate, innovate, and drive change. The President has engaged with me, assessed my capabilities, and I don’t believe he made a mistake in appointing me,” she added.
She highlighted her 15 years in public service, beginning as a staff nurse and later working as a senior disaster management officer at NADMO.
“I started as a staff nurse and rose to a senior nursing officer. From there, I worked at NADMO as a senior disaster management officer. My job at the ministry will be to collaborate and provide leadership to ensure the system works,” she explained.
