The Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has reaffirmed government’s commitment to supporting the most vulnerable in society through enhanced social protection measures in the 2025 Budget.
Speaking during a meeting with the British High Commissioner to Ghana, Harriet Thompson, on Thursday morning, he highlighted key interventions aimed at cushioning low-income households amid economic challenges.

A major focus of the government’s efforts is the School Feeding Programme, which will see an increase in the amount allocated, rising from ¢1 to ¢2, with a commitment to further increases in the future.
Additionally, payments under the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme will also be increased to provide greater relief to beneficiaries.

To ensure sustainable funding for critical social interventions, the government has also uncapped key statutory levies, including the NHIS Levy and GETFund, freeing up more resources for their intended purposes.
Harriet Thompson commended the pro-poor focus of the 2025 Budget, describing it as forward-looking and a key milestone.

She further expressed the UK’s willingness to support Ghana’s efforts in climate finance, recognising the need to secure sustainable funding for long-term development.

The meeting reaffirmed the government’s strong commitment to protecting the vulnerable, ensuring that social protection programs remain a top priority despite economic constraints.
