A 50-year-old woman, identified as Auntie Akos, has tragically lost her life after falling into an abandoned mining pit at the Mpasatia Community Miner Site in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region.
Eyewitnesses attribute the incident to the many abandoned galamsey (illegal mining) pits in the area, which continue to pose grave safety risks to residents.
According to one account, the victim slipped and fell into one of the disused pits while walking through the site.
Workers nearby responded swiftly, rescuing her from the pit and rushing her to the Frimpong Boateng Clinic at Toase. However, she was pronounced dead on arrival by medical staff.

The incident has once again highlighted growing concerns over the dangers posed by unregulated mining activities and the lack of rehabilitation of abandoned mining sites.
Community members are calling on local authorities and the Minerals Commission to take urgent action to secure or reclaim such hazardous sites to prevent further loss of life.
