Morocco's football-loving population is still grappling with the bitter taste of defeat after losing to Nigeria in the final of the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations, held in Morocco.
The match, played on July 26, 2025, saw the host nation, Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses, take an early 2-0 lead in the first half. However, Nigeria’s Super Falcons staged a stunning comeback, equalizing and then taking control with a 3-2 lead, which they held until the final whistle.
The aftermath of defeat
The anticipated nationwide celebration in Morocco turned into a scene of anger, pain, and despair among fans at the stadium. Only a handful of supporters remained to witness the closing ceremony.
The Moroccan Football Association lodged a complaint with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) over alleged poor officiating by the Malawian center referee. As a result, the tournament’s referee coordinator was suspended.
Moroccan fans’ wishes
Many Moroccan football enthusiasts are wistfully hoping for a rematch, giving their team another shot at being crowned champions of the tournament.
Despite the loss, Morocco’s performance throughout the competition and their journey to the final were commendable, showcasing the growth and potential of women’s football in the country.
