Ghanaian dancer Endurance Grand has said her tomboy role in an upcoming film titled 'The Fisherman' reflects her real lifestyle and carries a strong message of self-expression.
Speaking on Prime Morning on Joy Prime, she explained that the character goes beyond acting, noting that it is about inspiring others to embrace who they truly are without fear of criticism.
“I was used to, ‘Why don’t you wear earrings, why don’t you wear a skirt, why don’t you do make-up?’ Becoming a dancer and still being who I am, I feel like I was used to it. The only thing that will get me is when you talk about something I really value, my family, then you will hear me talk,” she said.
On staying true to herself despite criticism, she stated: “This is who I am, and this is what I continue to be. As much as you continue to talk each and every single day, it is not going to change.”
Grand expressed excitement about playing the role, saying she considered it an opportunity to communicate a broader message.
“I was very excited and grateful that I got to play the role of a tomboy, because I was also sending a message: I want to be who I want to be and still impact positively,” she said.
She added that physical appearance does not define one’s worth: “How I appear physically doesn’t have to do with what I have to offer. It doesn’t have to do with my physical features. In actual sense, the movie really sends a message.”
Endurance recalled receiving backlash when she once switched to a feminine look, saying she once dressed as a lady, and people on social media gave negative comments like, "Berma [man] is wearing a dress."
Despite such comments, she stressed that she embraces both sides of her identity. “I also embrace my feminine side. I am very comfortable with it. I like to switch it up depending on how I’m feeling, but most times, I dress as a tomboy.”
'The Fisherman' movie, written and directed by Zoey Martinson, also stars Ricky Adelayitar, William Lamptey, and Kiki Romi.
It premieres on 19th September, 2025.
