Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Mr. Edudzi Kudzo Tameklo, has called on Corporate Ghana and state institutions to invest more in lesser-funded sports to help them grow and gain recognition on the international stage.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by Ghana’s national armwrestling team, the Golden Arms, Mr. Tameklo praised the athletes for their exceptional performance at the recently held World Armwrestling Championship, where they clinched two silver and one bronze medal.
“I was happy when you called back with the indication that you have become giants out of the little we have been doing to help,” he said.
“This is proof that with the right support, Ghana’s lesser-known sports can achieve global success.”
The Golden Arms had earlier impressed at the 14th Africa Armwrestling Championship in Abuja, Nigeria, before making history on the world stage through the performances of Mabel Yeboah and Blessed Abeka Nunoo.
Earlier this year, the team also captured 55 medals at the continental level.
Mr. Tameklo congratulated the athletes for their discipline and resilience, urging them not to relent. “With the record you will set, people will be struggling to get there, so I urge you to keep fighting and the sky cannot be your limit,” he encouraged.
He further commended Mr. Charles Osei Asibey, President of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation, for his tireless commitment and investment in developing the sport in Ghana and beyond.
Mr. Asibey, on his part, expressed gratitude to the NPA for their support, stressing that it was key to preparing the athletes for both the African and World Championships. “Your contribution helped boost our momentum and performance,” he said.
The Golden Arms are now shifting focus to upcoming competitions, including the 2026 Africa Armwrestling Championship to be hosted in Accra and the 2027 African Games in Egypt.
The courtesy call also had in attendance Mr. Richard Akpokavie, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, Mr. Husseini Addy, Technical Director of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation, and Mr. Kenneth Odeng Adade.
