The Member of Parliament for Tano North, Dr Gideon Boako, has expressed deep concern about the growing menace of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, in his constituency.
He warned that the destructive activities pose a serious threat to water bodies, farmlands and the livelihoods of residents.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sɛn programme on Wednesday, October 1, Dr Boako said the alarming spread of galamsey in parts of Tano North risked undermining agriculture, which remains the backbone of the constituency’s economy.
He cautioned that the situation could escalate into a major environmental and social crisis if not addressed urgently.
“Illegal mining is gradually destroying our rivers and farmlands. If care is not taken, it will become difficult for farmers to sustain their crops and for communities to access clean drinking water,” the MP lamented.
He urged both local authorities and national security agencies to intensify enforcement against perpetrators.
Dr Boako further appealed to chiefs, opinion leaders, and the youth of Tano North to join hands in the fight against galamsey, stressing that protecting the environment was a shared responsibility.
He reiterated his commitment to working with the government and stakeholders to ensure that the menace is curtailed to preserve the constituency’s resources for future generations.
