The town of Elmina, in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem Constituency of the Central Region, has been without flowing water for weeks. Taps have run dry, forcing residents to rely on sachet water for cooking, bathing and drinking.
Elderly residents, some as old as 72, now walk long distances each day in search of a few litres to survive.
The Sekyere Hemang Water Treatment Plant, which serves Elmina and surrounding communities, is under serious threat. Illegal mining along the River Pra has polluted the water and filled the plant’s intake point with silt, making it impossible to draw and treat raw water.
In Episode Three of the “Dear Mahama, #StopGalamsey,” series, JoyNews reveals how illegal mining is turning the search for water into a daily fight for survival in Elmina.
