Chiefs of Agona Nyakrom traditional area in the Central region are calling on the government to take urgent action against the resurgence of illegal mining in the area.
They explained that although the community had previously resisted galamsey activities on its lands, renewed operations upstream have now heavily polluted the Ayensu River, the main water source for the Kwanyako Water Treatment Plant, which serves Agona Nyakrom and neighbouring communities.
The contamination has spread widely, affecting more than 10 districts in the Central Region and leaving thousands of residents without access to clean, safe water.
JoyNews' Emmanuel Dzivenu has more in this episode of Dear Mahama, Stop Galamsey Series.
