Senior Researcher and Deputy Head of Programmes in Peace Operations, Stabilisation and Peacebuilding at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) has stressed the urgent need for enhanced protection for the Kwahu queen mother.
This comes after the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) directed the immediate release of the Kwahu queen mother, Nana Adwoa Gyamfua III, following a disputed dawn police operation on Monday that heightened tensions within the Kwahu Traditional Area.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story on Monday, Mustapha Abdallah highlighted the delicate balance between traditional authority and state security structures, noting that while chieftaincy institutions are critical to local governance, constitutional responsibility for maintaining law and order rests with the Ghana Police Service.
He stressed that once the queen mother is released, ensuring her safety must become a priority.
“We need to give her protection. The Ghana Police Service needs to provide her with security while mediation efforts continue between the paramount chief, the traditional institutions and other stakeholders to find an amicable solution to the problem,” he advised.
Mr Abdallah emphasised that although the IGP’s directive should reign supreme in matters of national security, the police must go further by safeguarding the queen mother to prevent retaliatory attacks or further escalation of tensions.
“The IGP’s instruction should reign supreme, but again, he needs to give protection to the Queen Mother and begin to engage in efforts aimed at finding an amicable solution to the problem,” he said.
