The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has attributed the party’s reduced parliamentary numbers in the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s decision to concede defeat ahead of the official declaration of the 2024 general election.
He claimed that the former Vice President, who led the party into the election, contributed significantly to the NPP’s heavy losses in Parliament through that action.
Speaking during his campaign tour in Tarkwa-Nsuaem in the Western Region on Monday, November 24, Mr Agyapong warned that such premature actions undermine the electoral fortunes of parties and should not form the basis for future leadership ambitions.
"You cannot rush to concede defeat before counting is done and cause our MPs to lose seats, then expect leadership again. Not today, not tomorrow," he told party delegates.
He also argued that "I have endured the insults and attacks in silence, but the day I choose to speak, you will know there are real men in this party."
Currently, the National Democratic Congress holds 185 out of the 275 seats in Parliament, while the New Patriotic Party has 87, with four seats occupied by independent candidates.
