The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) says a future NPP government under the leadership of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia will not reduce the producer price of cocoa once it is announced.

Chairman of the NPP Policy Committee on Agriculture of the party, Dr Isaac Yaw Opoku, said the party remains committed to protecting the interests and livelihoods of cocoa farmers across the country.

Speaking at a press conference at the NPP headquarters on Sunday, August 9, 2026, Dr Opoku said the party would continue to advocate policies that ensure cocoa farmers receive fair returns for their produce.

He said an NPP government led by Dr Bawumia would maintain the producer price of cocoa once it had been announced, stressing that farmers should not be made to bear the consequences of policy or market-related challenges.

"The next NPP administration under Dr Mahamudu Bawumia will not reduce the producer price of cocoa made season once it has been announced; a price announced to the Ghanaian farmer will be a price honoured to the Ghanaian farmer," he said.

According to him, the NPP will continue to fight for cocoa farmers and ensure their concerns remain central to decisions affecting the cocoa sector.

"The NPP supports sector reforms; we support traceability, value addition and guarantee for the farmer," he said.

His comments come amid growing debate over the recently passed Ghana Cocoa Board Bill, 2026.

Dr Opoku has also criticised aspects of the new legislation, arguing that some of its provisions could impose unnecessary restrictions on farmers.

He said the NPP’s position remains that cocoa farmers must be protected and supported because of their critical contribution to Ghana’s economy and the sustainability of the cocoa industry.
