Former Education Minister and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, has commended the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government for what he describes as steady economic management.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, January 17, Dr Adutwum said the government had taken meaningful steps to stabilise the economy, particularly in restoring confidence in the cedi and improving performance across key sectors.
"Like any Ghanaian, I am happy that the government is doing something good for our nation, bringing stability," he said on the show when host, Sampson Lardy Anyenini asked what he makes of the current situation of the economy.
Dr Adutwum stressed that his broader political vision is anchored on sustainability, explaining that the central question for Ghana now is how to preserve and strengthen the current economic stability for future generations.
"When I move beyond that, I begin to look at the future of Ghana, and where we can go, then we will have a different discussion. But of course, the government comes in and is able to do certain things; it is not about politics, it is about doing the reality and saying I like 5% inflation, it is a good thing. It brings stability, I like the fact that the cedi is stable, it is a good thing," he said.
"So we are in a good place, stability, but we have to look beyond that stability to say if there is no oxygen on the patient, what will happen? When I take off the oxygen, if I take off the ten billion intervention what will happen?."
He underscored the need for long-term planning, disciplined governance and policy continuity, describing economic stewardship as a relay rather than a sprint, one that demands foresight, restraint and collective responsibility.
