A national competition aimed at inspiring university students to develop practical solutions for vulnerable populations has garnered strong interest across Ghana’s tertiary institutions.

The initiative, which targeted students in International Relations, Development Studies, and related programmes, challenged participants to design interventions addressing issues affecting street children, struggling mothers, orphans, and impoverished communities.

Organised through a collaboration between Youth Bridget Foundation (YBF) and its academic partners, the challenge received innovative submissions from University students across the country. Students were tasked with proposing solutions that are grounded in local realities and capable of influencing long-term change.

A diverse panel of judges was assembled to review the submissions, featuring experts from the humanitarian and development sectors, including World Inspiring Network’s Maxwell Ayebi, FEED Ghana’s Vivian Boamah, and Millicent Owusu of Adventist Foundation, among others, who contributed field-based insight into the challenges facing vulnerable groups.

The judging panel assessed each proposal based on innovation, feasibility, and anticipated community impact. Several outstanding submissions were shortlisted for potential development, with organisers indicating that selected groups may receive mentorship and technical support to refine their ideas for pilot implementation.

Speaking to the media, organisers praised the students’ commitment to addressing inequality and social protection gaps. They highlighted the competition as a bridge between academic study and real-world development practice.

“This challenge shows that Ghana’s young people are not only aware of the issues affecting vulnerable populations, but they are also ready to take action,” one organiser noted. “What we saw were solutions with depth, empathy, and true potential to transform lives.”

The initiative is expected to become an annual programme, expanding partnerships and strengthening opportunities for youth-driven development projects nationwide.
