Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has taken legal action against the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, and three others over allegations he says are defamatory and intended to damage his reputation.
Mr Afenyo-Markin disclosed the development on the floor of Parliament on Monday, August 24, 2026, as the House resumed sitting amid an escalating public dispute between him and the GoldBod CEO.
The Effutu Member of Parliament said the suits followed allegations made against him in connection with his scrutiny of GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP).
Mr Afenyo-Markin told Parliament that two separate suits had been filed.
According to him, Suit No. GT/1029/2026, titled Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin v. Samuel Adu Gyamfi and Multimedia Group Limited, had been filed at the Accra High Court.
He said a second action, Suit No. GR/ACH/CC/C5/02/2026, titled Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin v. Eric Adjei and Peace FM, had been filed at the Achimota Circuit Court.
The Minority Leader said the legal action was his response to what he considered false and defamatory allegations made against him.
“I have accordingly caused writs to be filed in Suit Number GT/1029/2026, titled Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin versus Samuel Adu Gyamfi and Multimedia Group Limited at the Accra High Court, and Suit Number GR/ACH/CC/C5/02/2026, titled Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin versus Eric Adjei and Peace FM at the Achimota Circuit Court,” he said.
He expressed confidence that the courts would determine the matter on its merits.
“I have every confidence that in the fullness of time the court will make the appropriate determination,” he added.
GoldBod row
The court action is the latest development in a heated political and public dispute over the financial performance of the DGPP and GoldBod’s role in the programme.
Mr Afenyo-Markin has been demanding greater transparency over a reported US$1.7 billion loss under the programme.
He has argued that the reported loss involves public resources and has called for detailed explanations of the transactions, including the identity of off-takers, discounts applied to gold purchases, fees earned and the factors responsible for the reported loss.
Mr Gyamfi, however, has rejected the suggestion that GoldBod itself incurred the reported loss and has pushed back strongly against the Minority Leader’s claims.
The disagreement subsequently moved beyond the substantive questions surrounding the gold programme, with the two men exchanging accusations and counter-accusations in the media.
Mr Afenyo-Markin has maintained that his scrutiny of GoldBod is part of Parliament’s constitutional oversight responsibility and has denied any improper motive.
Ready for investigation
The Minority Leader also recently indicated that he was prepared to submit himself to any investigation if a formal complaint was made against him over the extortion allegation.
He said he expected those making the allegation to report him to the appropriate investigative authorities so that he could respond to the claims through due process.
The latest lawsuits now place the allegations before the courts, potentially shifting the dispute from the political and media arena to judicial proceedings.
Mr Gyamfi has indicated that he is prepared to defend his position in court.
