The Ghana Police Service has arrested 68 suspects and confiscated 835 digital devices in a coordinated operation with Interpol as part of efforts to combat cybercrime.

Director-General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, disclosed that the operation also led to the identification of 108 victims, while investigators traced losses exceeding US$450,000 and recovered a significant amount of the stolen funds.

COP Donkor made the disclosure at the launch of the 2026 National Cyber Security Awareness Month for the Ghana Police Service and the law enforcement community on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.

According to her, the outcome highlights the importance of intelligence-led policing and international collaboration in dismantling increasingly sophisticated cybercrime operations.

“In one coordinated Interpol operation, the CID arrested 68 suspects, seized 835 devices, identified 108 victims, traced more than $450,000 in losses and made significant recovery of funds,” she said.

She said the operation formed part of wider efforts by the CID and its partners to identify, disrupt and prosecute individuals involved in cybercrime networks.

COP Donkor noted that the Police Service was also expanding its capacity to investigate technology-driven crimes through enhanced digital forensics, cyber intelligence and virtual asset investigations.

She said stronger collaboration with law enforcement agencies in Ghana and abroad was equally critical, given the cross-border nature of cybercrime.

According to her, such partnerships enable investigators to track suspects, secure digital evidence, and trace or recover illicitly obtained funds.

“Cybercrime may be borderless, but criminals are not beyond reach,” she said.

COP Donkor further disclosed that a separate joint operation conducted by the Cyber Security Authority and the CID in a suburb near Tema in 2025 led to the arrest of 39 suspects.

Several digital devices were also seized during the operation from a location suspected to be a cyber fraud hub.

The CID boss said the Police Service would continue to strengthen its partnerships and investigative capabilities to stay ahead of evolving cybercrime threats.
