President John Dramani Mahama has dissolved the governing board of the National Sports Authority (NSA) with immediate effect.

In a directive issued on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, the President announced that the affected board, along with eight others, would be reconstituted in due course.

The board, chaired by Dr Fred Awaah, was sworn into office in December 2025.

Members of the dissolved NSA board included NSA Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah; National Sports College representative Fuseini Bawa; Ministry of Sports and Recreation representative Samuel Duku Sarfo; and Ministry of Finance representative Nana Adwoa Owusu-Amoh.

The Ministry of Education was represented by Is-Haku Al-Hassan, while the Security Services Sports Association had Col. Richard Kofi Akoto as its representative.

Other members were Dr Luguterah Austin Wontepaga, representing tertiary institutions; National Paralympic Committee representative Samson Deen; and Ghana Olympic Committee representative Richard Kofi Akpokavie.

The board also included distinguished sporting personalities Hajia Sulemana Zenabu and Alhaji Iddris Muntawakilu Ahmed, as well as Prof Emmanuel Osei Sarpong and Theresa Osahene, who represented persons in sports development.

The condition of various sporting facilities, including the Accra and Baba Yara stadia, has been the subject of conversation, as the facilities are not in shape to host high-profile matches and events.

The issue comes at a crucial time for the Black Stars, who are expected to host The Gambia in their second group game of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers this month.
