The former Executive Director of the Ghana School Feeding Programme says he has the 'master stroke' to the ailing project he initiated. In an interview with Joy News on Wednesday, Dr. Amoako Tuffuor minced no words in touting his ability to turn around the confusion in the implementation of the feeding programme. “After running this programme for a while, after initiating it, I have good ideas to give any government,” he emphasized. His call for the job comes just a day after basic school children in a number of schools across the country went to shcool without thier usual free meals when caterers employed under the Kufuor administration and those employed by the present administration battled over who had the right to prepare the meals. Some of the children in the Western Region were even said to have been served with packs of chewing gum and biscuits to 'alleviate' the hunger they experienced on the first day of reopening. Deputy Local Government Minister, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah told Joy FM on Tuesday that the government was conducting a “surgical operation” to address irregularities associated with the programme. Citing massive corruption, graft and conflict of interest in the implementation of the programme, the Deputy Minister said government needs time to fix the situation. But Dr. Tuffuor insisted he is the solution to the crisis. The former head has had a dramatic association with the Feeding Programme. He is credited as one of the initiators and under him the programme was voted as the best in the world in 2008, but that success was short-lived. Two audit report findings on the School Feeding Programme were replete with accusations of corruption, and a ‘sack him’ crusade by the Committee for Joint Action led to the termination of Dr. Amoako’s appointment in April, 2008. But he wants to stage a comeback to resolve the seeming crisis in the programme. His credentials may have been boosted by an April 2009 report on the Programme which exonerated him of all allegations of corruption. In an interview with Joy News on Wednesday, he advised government to put aside his political affiliation and assign him to the job. “Foreign governments consult, so how about doing it free for my own government? Let’s put politics aside. Call Amoako Tuffour, sit him down and I will lay it down,” he touted. He said he has put in a proposal and hopes the government will accept it.
