Former Supreme Court Judge, Justice Prof. V.C.R.A.C. Crabbe has charged students of the Accra Academy to live up to the ideals of the founding fathers of the school.
Speaking at the launch of the 85th anniversary of Accra Academy in Accra Justice Crabbe said "to live a worthy life, it is important to discover yourself at an early stage through learning and remaining ignorant of the things not worth knowing just as the founders had shown in their early life."
The launch was under the theme, “Human resource development and challenges in secondary education: its implication to national development”
Justice Crabbe, who was the guest speaker, reminded the youth that knowledge was a precious treasure and that “the quality and quantity of what we learn has a direct bearing on lives.”
“The purpose of education is to learn to develop ourselves and be able to handle anything that comes our way”, he stressed.
He asked the students to have a specific purpose, grab the essentials and supplement new ideas with individual thoughts and apply to cause a change in society.
Justice Crabbe cautioned all stakeholders in the educational sector to demonstrate that education is the backbone of the country and must be wary of people who, through their interests, would seek to destroy it.
He urged teachers and parents to play an active role in the molding of the youth into responsible people who could manage the affairs of the country.
The Speaker of Parliament, Edward Doe Adjaho, who chaired the event, challenged the school’s alumni to help the school to effectively educate the younger generation for the benefit of the country.
“The least we can do is to support the school so that the younger generation in the school will continue to build and uphold the good name of the school, and grow to become patriotic and responsible citizens,” he said.
On his part, the Headmaster of the school, Mr. Samuel Ofori-Adjei paid homage to the foresight of the founders of the Accra Academy who although in their twenties had the wonderful vision to establish this tradition of Accra Academy.”
“I am yet to come across any school in this country whose slogan reverberates with the same passion as that of the Accra Academy. I am equally grateful to the past heads of the institution, dead or alive, staff, alumni and other stakeholders who have continued to contribute to the sustenance of this great tradition” he reiterated.
He further requested all and sundry to always remember the philosophical underpinnings of the school which are found in the motto, maxims, vision and mission statements, anthems and as well as the school song.
Mr. Ofori-Adjei finally, called for the harnessing of all resources of the school in order to upgrade the Accra Academy to a twenty first century institution of learning.
“We need to harness all the resources at our disposal in order to upgrade the infrastructure befitting a 21st century institution of learning”, he concluded.
