The Ashanti Regional Police Motor and Transport Unit (MTTU) has denied the allegation that personnel of the unit discriminate against commercial drivers in the enforcement of motor traffic regulations. Deputy Superintendent of Police James Sarfo-Peprah, the Regional Commander of the MTTU, said motor traffic rules and regulations were no respecter of persons or institutions. "My men have always enforced MTTU laws to the letter without any fear or favour". Mr Sarfo-Peprah said this at a workshop organized for some drivers and vulcanisers in Kumasi. The workshop was sponsored by the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) and was aimed at building the capacities and skills of the participants to enable them exhibit professionalism in the observance of motor traffic regulations. Some participants accused personnel of the MTTU of consistently turning a blind eye to government vehicles that exhibited recklessness on the road and said this was a big worry to commercial drivers who were always being arrested for such offences. Mr Sarfo-Peprah said a total of 740 million cedis representing court fines of offending drivers was realized between January and December last year. The offences included drunk-driving, driving without license, loading and off-loading passengers at unauthorized place, over speeding, driving without fire extinguishers and warning triangles, jumping traffic lights when it signaled red and refusing to stop.Source: GNA
