Jose Mourinho and Dr Eva Carneiro have today reached a settlement thought to be worth more than £1.2 million after she accused him of discrimination and victimisation.

The ex-Chelsea boss made a shock appearance at the hearing today after being accused of calling Dr Carneiro “daughter of a whore” in Portuguese – something he denied.

New Manchester United manager Mourinho arrived unexpectedly at the hearing because it was not thought he was going to give evidence until next week.

Today the tribunal came to an abrupt end as the two sides reached a settlement deal "on confidential terms".

It is believed the settlement will be worth more than the £1.2m after Dr Eva rejected a previous offer of that amount.

But there was still no apology from Mourinho who simply wished her a "successful career".

Dr Eva had been due to begin giving evidence today but addressing the tribunal, Daniel Stilitz QC, for Chelsea and Mourinho, said: "We are pleased to be able to tell the tribunal that the parties agreed a settlement on confidential terms."

In a statement Dr Carneiro said: "I am relieved that today we have been able to conclude this tribunal case. It has been an extremely difficult and distressing time for me and my family and I now look forward to moving forward with my life.

"My priority has always been the health and safety of the players and fulfilling my duty of care as a doctor. In running onto the pitch to treat a player, who requested medical attention, I was following the rules of the game and fulfilling my medical responsibilities.

"I would like to thank everyone who has supported me including my husband, family and friends and members of the football community."

Chelsea said they were "pleased to announce" the hearing had come to an end.

The club apologised to Dr Carneiro and said that running onto the pitch was "both following the rules" and "fulfilling her responsibility as a doctor".

A statement released by the club added: "Dr Carneiro has always put the interests of the club's players first. Dr Carneiro is a highly competent and professional sports doctor. She was a valued member of the club's medical team and we wish her every success in her future career.

"Jose Mourinho also thanks Dr Carneiro for the excellent and dedicated support she provided as First Team Doctor and he wishes her a successful career."

It was Mourinho's second public appearance since his confirmation as the new Manchester United boss.

Former first team medic Dr Eva had also been claiming constructive dismissal against Chelsea FC.

The pair had a very public falling out after Dr Eva, 42, went on the pitch to treat Eden Hazard leaving Chelsea temporarily down to nine men.

Yesterday it was claimed Mourinho told the former first team doctor she should work with Chelsea Ladies following their bust up.

He is said to have told head of communications and PR at Chelsea, Steve Atkins, that he did not want Dr Carneiro on the bench the next match, adding: “She works in academy team or ladys (sic) team not with me”.

Dr Eva had said the new Manchester United boss sexually discriminated against her.

Yesterday the tribunal heard her claims that Mourinho told Chelsea medical director, Paco Biosca: “If they don’t know how to do their jobs and they don’t understand the game you get other ones. You have to understand the game.”

Mary O’Rourke QC, for Dr Carneiro, said: “Not understanding the game is a common allegation put to women in the football world.”
