Ashaiman have retained the Sheikh Sharubutu Ramadan Cup trophy after defeating Sabon Zongo 3:2 on penalties in the finals.
The final match ended 1:1 in regulation time after Ashaiman swiftly cancelled out Sabon Zongo's late goal, and they gallantly defended their trophy in fron of the watching National Chief Imam, His Eminence Sheikh Usman Nuhu Sharubutu.
Ashaiman started their defense of the trophy with a 1:0 win over New Fada, before knocking out Darkuman and New Town in the second round and semi finals respectively.
Zongo on the other hand had a walk over on Nima and qualified to the semi finals as the best losing side of the 2nd round. But they defeated Mamobi in the semi finals to face Ashaiman in the finals.
Sabon Zongo's Richard Sosu and Issaka Abdullah won the best player and best goalkeeper respectively, whiles former Ashantigold and Raja Casablanca striker Yakubu Mohammed won the top scorer award with 4 goals. Winners of the individual awards receive mattresses from Latex Foam Ghana Limited.
The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Usman Nuhu Sharubutu prayed for the nation before the tournament kicked off and urged the youth to stay united, peaceful and disciplined.
Dr Kwame Baah-Nuako, Vice President of The Royal Royal Bank in charge of Corporate Affairs and Research; who were headline sponsors of the competition, commended the participating teams for living up to the values of the competition and also reiterated Royal Bank's commitment to supporting community development through their charitable wing, The Royal Bank Foundation.
The annual Sheikh Sharubutu Ramadan Cup is organised by Crisp Communications, under the auspices of the National Chief Imam. The competition is aimed at bringing zongo communities together to climax the celebration of Eid Fitr, the Islamic Festival which marks the end of Ramadan.
Twelve communities namely; Ashaiman, Alajo, Darkoman, Madina, Mamobi, New Fadama, New Town, Nima, Nsawam, Sabon Zongo, Sukura and Tudu took part in the competition.
The tournament was sponsored by The Royal Bank and supported by Coca Cola, Marwako Fast Food, Afro Arab Group and Latex Foam.
