President John Evans Atta Mills has commended the Togolese security authorities for their role in the re-arrest of the notorious fugitive, Johnson Kombian.
In a statement signed by Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, a Deputy Minister of Information, and issued by the Ministry of Information in Accra on Sunday, the President reiterated his commitment to continue to support the security agencies to fight crime and ensure that every Ghanaian was safe at all times.
It said the President was of the view that the successful re-arrest of Kombian attested to what collective collaboration among nations underpinned by shared information and mutual trust could produce.
It said President Mills commended the national security apparatus for the effective co-ordination and collaboration that led to Kombian's arrest in Togo.
The statement recalled that two Togolese fugitives, Suabe Jamong and Dafalian Durk, who allegedly killed a Togolese military officer after robbing a Benz bus and escaped to Ghana were arrested in Ghana and extradited to Togo on October 4. 2010.
It said President Mills reminded the security agencies of his earlier directive to them to step up their efforts at combating the menace of violent crime and ensure that criminals were ruthlessly dealt with.
It added that the President also warned that Prison officials who allowed convicted criminals to escape would not be spared and urged them to maintain a high sense of discipline and professionalism.
The statement gave the assurance that the government would continue to provide the security agencies with all the support they needed including logistics and capacity building, to enhance their operations.
