The Government has welcomed the decision by the National Media Commission to change the management of the state Broadcaster, Ghana Broadcasting Corporation. A statement released by the media regulator on Wednesday asked William Ampem-Darko, Director-General of the GBC to proceed on leave. The statement also asked the Board Chairman of the Corporation to step aside. The action by the NMC follows adverse findings made against Mr. Ampem-Darko in an interim audit report. In reaction, the Deputy Information Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa lauded the NMC for exercising their constitutional duty. He said the government has been concerned about the seeming bad news and countless petitions that have emerged from the Corporation in recent times and expressed hope that the NMC will conduct thorough investigations into allegations of malfeasance leveled against the out-going Director-General. “We at the Ministry of Information have been very worried that instead of GBC bringing us the news, it appears they are always in the news themselves and they have not been in the news for good reasons. “That has certainly affected the image of the state broadcaster; it has affected morale; we receive too many petitions, too many complaints, too many wrangling. We have all been concerned. “…We do hope that their investigations will be carried out timeously and that the outcome will be fair to everybody involved in the matter,” he said. He advised workers to be calm and not to take sides, adding, “This is the time for sober reflection. This is the time for the staff to stay focused on their responsibilities and await the NMC’s investigations into the matter." He said the GBC has a responsibility to deliver on their constitutional mandate of informing, educating and entertaining Ghanaians.
