Security analyst at the Kofi Annan Peace Keeping Training Centre, Dr. Kwasi Aning, has called for a ruthless action against corrupt Customs and Exercise and Preventive Service (CEPS) and national security officials whose actions have been found to be inimical to the state. Dr. Kwasi Aning is alarmed at the seeming infiltration of the security infrastructure by corrupt officials, saying that could have serious implications even for the security of the president and his vice. He was speaking to Joy FM on the propriety of government allegedly collaboration with ace investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas to unravel alleged corruption at the Tema Harbour. Anas’ revelation of CEPS, national security and police personnel taking bribes from importers and denying the state its due revenue has led to a huge public outcry. National Security Advisor Brigadier Nunoo Mensah expressed worry at the politicization of the security apparatus alleging that some officials owe allegiance to their political parties rather than the broader national interest. Dr. Aning said the statement by the security advisor coupled with the president’s own admission to US officials that some of his personnel may have been co-opted by drug lords pose grave security challenges for the nation. He said the situation justifies the decision to hire a private investigator in the person of Anas Aremeyaw Anas to look into alleged corrupt practices in key state institutions. “If you have a government that cannot trust fully its own security agents that must be loyal first to the state and to protect the state, if they are unable to do that work and government is forced to go out of its rank to ask for the support of an investigative journalist to be able to expose the levels of corruption and level of incompetence in one of its critical agencies then it raises issues and questions we need to tackle seriously,” he said. “The government should move with rapid speed and decapitate those found to be guilty,” he added. Dr. Aning stated there is too much talk with little attempt to take action against acts of corruption against the state. “If we look at the Elubo video, nothing happened; the Osu Children’s Home nothing happened; it looks as if we have become a nation of whiners; we like to talk and be lyrical and nothing happens. “I think the president now has the evidence, he has shown the anger but let that anger be followed by action. “…Those people must be put on trial, be given the maximum sentence and their properties seized then we can say that we are beginning to do something. There is too much talk and little action,” he said. Story by Nathan Gadugah/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
