Ghanaian boxer Amadu Mohammed has set his sights on a place in the medal zone after progressing to the quarterfinals of the men's Bantamweight (55kg) event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

Mohammed booked his place in the last eight after defeating Temakau Eriu in his opening bout, moving a step closer to securing a podium finish for Team Ghana.

Following the victory, the African champion thanked Ghanaians for their support and urged them to continue praying for him as he prepares for his next contest.

“I’m very proud because our coach supported us, prayed for us that we would get there. So my message now is, Ghanaians, keep on praying for us. We are not done yet. Let’s reach the medal zone and we will have more to say,” he said.

Ghana Olympic Committee President Richard Akpokavi hailed Mohammed's performance, describing him as one of Ghana's brightest medal prospects at the Games.

“He’s one of our top boxers, African champion. So we believe that he’s one of the potential medalists for us,” Akpokavi told Max TV.

Akpokavi acknowledged that multi-sport competitions often begin slowly but expressed confidence that Ghana's fortunes would improve as more events get underway.

“When you come to a competition like this, you expect it. It starts slow sometimes, but the important thing is there are many more fights ahead of us, many more competitions ahead of us,” he added.

Mohammed will return to the ring on Tuesday, July 28, knowing another victory will guarantee him a place in the medal zone and keep Ghana's hopes of winning boxing honours alive at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
