Government is in the process of establishing insurance policies to protect farmers and their farms, the Deputy Agric Minister Mr. Yaw Effah Baafi, has said. His statement follows last year's flood which swept away huge farmlands in the Northern region. Speaking on Joy FM's Super Morning show on Thursday,Mr. Yaw Baafi said his outfit is liaising with stakeholders to draft the insurance policy. "We are drafting the policy in consultation and collaboration with some insurance companies, both foreign and internal," he said, adding, government will finalise drafting by the close of 2012. He said the insurance will cover flooding and fire outbreaks. "These are the two most important issues we are trying to address", he added. Mr. Baafi noted the ministry is aware of the disaster that befell the farmers and that government is planning to exploit the situation to the advantage of the farmers by establishing a dam so that water can be harvested for agricultural purposes in that side of the country. He also said studies have been conducted, estimates have been done and sources are being explored to put the dam into effect but could not mention the exact estimate.
