The Akim Oda Magistrate Court has imposed a GH¢150 fine on Odeshie Kwasi Nyame, the assembly member for Akim Otwereso, for strangling a farmer during a scuffle.
Kwasi Nyame, 53, pleaded guilty to the charge of assault, he would go to prison for 18 months in hard labour if he fails to pay the fine.
The court presided over by Mr Albert Owusu Annor, ordered the assembly member to pay an additional GH¢150 in respect of compensation to the farmer, Mr Kwasi Yeboah.
Police Inspector Kwaku Appiah stated during prosecution that on September 28, 2009 the assembly member collected GH¢4.00 from some residents to secure electricity meters for them.
According to Inspector Appiah, Mr Yeboah who is also a Unit Committee member at Otwereso, and other witnesses in the case went to collect the meter, but the assembly member rather refunded GH¢ 4.00 to Mr Yeboah.
He said Mr Yeboah refused to collect the money and picked one of the meters from the assembly member’s table. The situation degenerated into a scuffle during which the assembly member strangled the Unit Committee member.
Mr Yeboah was rushed to the Akim Oda Government Hospital for medical treatment, and the assembly member was arrested.
