Men and women of the Ghana Police Service at Bisease, Ochiso, Enyan Abbasa, Nkwantanum and Ajumako all in the Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam District of the Central Region, have been commended for their performance in reducing the crime rate in the District. The District Police Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Seth Tay, gave the commendation after their annual performance review. ASP Tay told the Ghana News Agency that the criminal cases in the District stood at 286 in 2009, while that of 2010 dropped to 159. He said the District recorded 102 assault cases in 2009 and 36 in 2010, while 56 stealing cases recorded in 2009 also dropped to 31 in 2010. ASP Tay was optimistic that the year 2011 would record even less criminal occurrences as a result of some measures that had been put in place. Among them are the formation of neighbourhood watchdog committees in the local communities, he said, and called on all traditional rulers in the area to contact his outfit for guidelines for the formation of such committees. He also urged chiefs to work hand in hand with the police to ensure all year round peaceful and prosperous living. The District Commander was, however, not happy with the performance of the drivers in the area, saying that in 2009, 21 accident cases involving 71 vehicles were recorded with five deaths, while in 2010, 36 accident cases involving 48 vehicles with three deaths were recorded. He said periodic road safety education had been planned for drivers in the District and charged drivers to practise what he termed as “defensive driving” to protect and to save lives.
