176 stranded Ghanaians in Libya are due in Ghana on Tuesday, deputy Information Minister, Baba Jamal has revealed.
The Ghanaians are expected to converge at the Egyptian border before being airlifted to Ghana.
Already 55 of the stranded Ghanaians out of the estimated 10,000 have returned to Ghana but the circumstances under which they came have been contested.
Initial reports suggested the returnees were a collaborative effort by the government task force charged with the responsibility of a successful evacuation but it has emerged that a Turkish company in Libya which employed the Ghanaians funded the evacuation of 32 of the 55 returnees.
Mohammed Ibrahim, one of the returnees told Joy FM the Turkish company made arrangements for the flight and funded the trip.
He claimed to have been injured after attacks in Libya and narrated the dire situation, including the threats of death many Ghanaians face, in Libya.
Minority Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Shirley Ayorkor Botwe questioned the evacuation plan being deployed by the state.
She criticised the seemingly snail pace at which the evacuation is being managed.
“I am disappointed because our hopes were raised that immediately evacuation will commence …but then hearing what the returnees have just said gives a lot of concern and panic.
“It means that till date if at all government has been successful in any evacuation at all then we take the 32 out of the 55 people who have arrived then government has only brought back 20 people out of the 4000 Ghanaians it claimed to have registered in Libya," she said.
“Are they really on top of issues,” she quizzed, adding, government must have a firm operational strategy in place to bring the stranded Ghanaians back home.
But the Deputy Minister reacted that government is on top of the issues.
He conceded there are some landing difficulties in Libya, and other organizational challenges government is facing but was hopeful government will surmount those challenges.
He also explained that government will collaborate with all agencies, institutions and individuals to bring the stranded Ghanaians home.
“As I talk to you now we’ve been able to evacuate about 176 to Cairo. Tomorrow they are expected in the flight,” he confirmed.
