Government is securing a chartered flight to airlift more Ghanaians stranded in Libya. A second batch of returnees arrived yesterday on an Egyptian airline bringing the number of those evacuated to 150.
Deputy Information Minster Baba Jamal said government wants to airlift them in much larger numbers to ensure that all of them escape the chaos in Libya.
The evacuation exercise has become necessary as a result of the political unrest in the North African country where protesters are calling for the resignation of President Muammar Al-Gaddhafi.
Speaking to Joy News, Deputy Minister for Information Baba Jamal said “we are expecting a chartered flight that will bring a larger number, so surely we are exploring all avenues and we are sure by the close of tomorrow we will be having a larger number arrive and on subsequent days we may have even two or three flights in a day.”
“95 arrived today. Initially they were 101 [but] unfortunately they could not finish processing six of them before the flight took off…There is no female yet but there are females at the various mobilization centres that will all be brought down when it is time,” he assured.
Some of the returnees expressed their joy at returning home. One of them who spoke to Joy News said he feels excited to have returned home.
Last Saturday the first batch of 55 Ghanaians arrived from Libya, but it is estimated that about ten thousand Ghanaians reside in the Maghrebian country.
